Water Only for 30 Days

February 15, 2009

On January 15th, I decided to start my new lifestyle.  You may recall that this blog wasn’t around on the 15th, but a few days later, once I received my scale, I weighed myself at 344 pounds and my weight loss blog journey began.

To lose this weight I knew I had to stop drinking soda and sweet tea;  two major staples in my old diet.  Like most Americans, I was consuming anywhere from 20 ounces to 100 ounces of sugary soda every day.  I put that to an end on the 15th of January and vowed to drink water for every meal, in addition to carrying a water bottle around with me all day.

I’ve kept that promise for 30 days:  No soda.  No sweet tea.  Not even juice.

A minor milestone, sure, but something I never thought I could accomplish.  I was so addicted to the caffeine and sugar that during the first week without it I was going through withdrawals.  It’s sad to ever reach that point.

I’ll never be like that again.

I just found your blog and am starting from the beginning. I’m overweight myself (5′ 11″ female starting at 271 lbs) and I’m trying to make the lifestyle changes that will get me healthy. I think if I aim for healthy, I’ll hit slim along the way.

I went through a similar deal- I gave up soda, coffee and caffeine a little over a month ago. I went into withdrawal like a junkie- it was awful! There was a day where I could NOT sit still. I was twitching like someone had hit me with a power line. But it made me even more determined to get away from the addicition.

I don’t know if you ran into this but when I would tell people that I was cutting out caffeine, they looked at me like I was crazy. I was told by many that they could never and WOULD never give it up, they just need it/love it/crave it too much.

I don’t want to be that. So, here we are. ;)

Thanks so much for blogging about your journey. You are an inspiration and I look forward to following you every step of the way.

Ive seen that those that are losing weight dump the soda, which is great, but I wonder about whether diet soda figures in at all. I drink a LOT of diet Mt. Dew. I work in IT. Im overweight. How is THAT for a stereotype? But….I also drink water daily. I keep terrible hours and sleep for maybe 5.5 a night. That caffeine really helps. *shrug*
