1284 Calories Burned in 99 Minutes

May 24, 2009 | Elliptical Workouts

I went to the gym tonight planning to workout for 45 minutes on the elliptical.  I even posted on twitter I was going for 45 minutes.  Well, once I stepped onto the machine something just “snapped” and I entered 99 minutes.

I wanted to beat the machine once and for all.  And so I did.

22 minutes left:

threefourths

Almost done:

almostdone

Finished:

finished

Getting on the elliptical machine Monday will be like restarting the Nintendo 5 minutes after you just rescued Princess — just to do it all over again.

Where do I go from here?

To get a more accurate judging it tracking of actual calories burnt you should use an accurate tracking device (look into a polar of garmin or like device). You will find the actual calories burnt will vary a bit from what the machine says (the machine is often generous versus the actual, variance is usually 25-35% less).

Awesome! Have you tried running? With summer coming, it’s a great way to get outdoors. Plus, you can enter a local 5k or 10k. When you finish a race, it’s a great sense of accomplishment. (Start with the treadmill in the gym, then reward yourself with a run outside when the weather is nice on the weekend.)

I agree. 5k’s are a lot of fun. I just did one today. The time passes so quickly and it’s great to be outdoors.

Try a different type of cardio… I guarantee it will kick your ass. The payoff will be huge. Your body gets “used” to the same excercises day in and day out – variety will be truly challenging.

I “graduated” from the elliptical to the treadmill, then eventually started running outdoors. It took a while to get used to the higher impact, especially since I tore a portion of an ACL a few years back. It is rewarding sometimes to get outside when the weather is nice.

Louisiana kinda sucks for outdoor running though. We get 6 good weeks of weather all year. The rest is heat / humidity, or cold /humidity.

Does your gym offer classes? Maybe something like kickboxing would be fun for you? (And I’ll second investing in a heart rate monitor!)

I agree with the others that running is a good way to change things up. Starting on the treadmill can help you to control your pace so you don’t burn out too quickly. ( I get the feeling you’d probably start out too fast and get really frustrated! )

If you google ‘your town’ + running, you’ll probably find several clubs you can join. All of these clubs will have at least a few beginners in them.
