I lost nearly 150 pounds by counting calories. I once weighed 344.2 pounds, now around 200. My story has been told on CNN, CBS, and Newsweek and will soon be in a book.

I agree with the others that running is a good way to change things up. Starting on the treadmill can help you to control your pace so you don't burn out too quickly. ( I get the feeling you'd probably start out too fast and get really frustrated! )

If you google 'your town' + running, you'll probably find several clubs you can join. All of these clubs will have at least a few beginners in them.

Does your gym offer classes? Maybe something like kickboxing would be fun for you? (And I'll second investing in a heart rate monitor!)

I "graduated" from the elliptical to the treadmill, then eventually started running outdoors. It took a while to get used to the higher impact, especially since I tore a portion of an ACL a few years back. It is rewarding sometimes to get outside when the weather is nice.

Louisiana kinda sucks for outdoor running though. We get 6 good weeks of weather all year. The rest is heat / humidity, or cold /humidity.
