Week 16: Weigh-in Results

May 13, 2009

4 months.  100th post.  5+ pounds lost.  It’s a good great weigh-in.

267-poundsMay 13 weight:  267.4
May 06 weight: 272.8
April 29 weight: 275.8
April 22 weight: 279.6
April 15 weight: 283.6

I’ve lost 5.4 pounds in the last 7 days and 76.8 pounds in 15 weeks.  Want stats from past weeks?  Check out my entire 16 week weight loss progress.

The progress chart has been leveling off over the past month– curving back up as my weight loss slowed down.  That trend stopped this week, I sent that poor little line plunging back south.

This time next month that line will be enjoying the 240s.

You lost 75 pounds in 4 months? CONGRATS! That’s unbelievable…. you are such an inspiration to us all.

Keep up the GOOOOOOD work!

Fantastic, Tyler. But, really, at this point, I expect nothing less when I check your blog on Wednesday mornings (how’s THAT for accountability?). Did you see the Biggest Loser finale last night? Absolutely incredible transformations–and a 48 year old woman won the big prize and kicked everybody’s asses. Gives me hope at my ripe old age of 38. You rock, Tyler!

p.s. Cute toes.

Tyler May 13, 2009 at 7:49 PM

Oh, I’m glad you like my toes, mommy.

Ninabi — I’ll make a post about that shortly! I deal with that a few different ways… Brandon, I workout 5-6 times a week. At least 30 minutes on the elliptical and 3 days a week I lift. I’ll make a post about that, too!

Amazing. Your hard work is paying off.

I have a question for you.

How do you deal with food in social situations? Do you have any problems with relatives who made special foods for an event and then pressure people to eat? Or business meals, where the rest of the table orders everything on the menu? (My husband finds it hard to sit there while the rest of the bunch chows down with abandon).

You look so different- you can be proud of you and your inner drill sergeant!

It’s great that you are still losing at such a fast rate! Awesome to hear.

Tyler, I was looking for a post of yours where you explain more in detail what exactly your ‘routine’ is?

Do you mainly do the elliptical? or a combination of machines? and for how long / etc? I want to know more about your exercise routine so I can get an idea of what it takes to lose what you are losing. I eat probably about as healthy as you do – going by your calorie counting posts.

Friggin-A man. That’s an awesome number in a week.

You are awesome. All that needs to be said, really. Well. The toes ARE cute. :)

Congrats on another great week! :D

ninabi, you have a some great questions there.

When I began losing weight, I just did my thing. And I stuck to it, no matter what everyone around me was doing or saying. My friends didn’t want to have me at a meal to see what I ate, they invited me because they liked ME. Remember that and you’ll be fine. They just get used to what you do and don’t eat over time, that you disappear for an hour or so every day for a workout.

But you are bumping up against a HUGE issue.

When you lose a significant amount of weight, you are going to lose some friends. You are.

Yes, it can smart at first. But when you break it down, it makes sense.

What you change first when you embark on sustainable weight loss is a change in your mindset and attitude. Of course when you change that, you will be comfortable with different people, and different people will be comfortable with you.

Staying heavy and unhealthy is a mindset of ‘I can’t’. “Life just happens to me.” “I have no control” And then there’s a whole shame-based thing.

Embarking on a healthy lifestyle shakes that up and turns it on its head. Now you are “I can.” “I have some control over my life.” I make my life, it doesn’t just happen to me.” This is going to scare the bejesus out of some of your friends. It just will.

While you were letting things happen, you unconsciously validated their belief that they were powerless. That made them comfy.

But now you are a person of agency, a person of action. Some of your friends are going to be shaken to their cores by watching you take back control of your life. Some of them will realign their thinking and cheer you on, and some of them will be so frightened that they disappear.

It’s a lifestyle and mindset change. And that changes everything!

It would be interesting to see a post from Tyler about these issues as they arise.

I didn’t mean to focus only on the downside. Yes, you will lose some friends, and yes, some of your closest relationships will change. You are becoming a person of agency. Some of your friends and relationships won’t fit your new life. Just the way it is.

BUT!

You will find new friends who think more similarly to the way you are thinking now. You’ll find yourself attracted more to people who don’t live with a suitcase of excuses and they’ll be more attracted to you. You may join a running club, or a triathlon club, or other movement focused club. You’ll make friends with people who have similar goals and interests, just as you did before. As your goals and interests change, so do your friends.

You’ll find that people perceive you differently because of the way you look. Unfair? Yes and no. Yes it is awful the way that we judge one another on appearances. No, it’s not unfair to recognize that most people after 30 and all after 40 are active people with some sense of discipline. It’s unfair to make character judgments based on fitness levels, but no to recognize the work.

Your whole world changes when you make a sustainable life change. And didn’t you want it to?

Truly a great job! My hat is off to you! It takes a lot of determination to do this and not give up. Congrats!
