If you couldn’t tell from my writing that I am an angry 23-year old from the suburbs, I’m sure my workout music playlists give that fact away.

Just kidding.  Not really.

I’m curious, though — what do my female readers listen to at the gym?

I recently started going to the gym again because I’m unemployed and it’s so boring. The only reason it’s bearable is my music, on your list I have 4, 22 and 36 on my playlist. The others are combinations of music that came out before I was even alive (I’m also 23) and songs from computer games.

I’d just like to say that I’ve been reading your blog for a while and I’m really impressed, my boyfriend went through the same thing within the last 2 years though he started at a lower weight than you. You’d better keep up the good work because it helps me to think about your progress at the gym when I’m on one of the cardio machines and feel like I have to give up! :)

I need and like a driving beat when I’m working it on the eliptical so (I’m a little ashamed to admit this) I have a lot of Britney Spears on my workout list. I also have other dance music like Rhianna, Lady GaGa, Fergie/Black Eyed Peas. I like to mix it all up with some choice rock – Queen is always great, Metallica, and “Black Betty” gets ya goin. Finally I have some great music by really inspiring women: Ani Difranco, Joan Jett, Gwen Stefani/No Doubt, Regina Spektor, etc. I try to have about 90 minutes of stuff that I just put on shuffle, then I have a cool-down list that’s about 30 minutes for stretching & the walk or drive home.

Haha that’s a fantastic list, I may steal some of it. As an angry 24-year old girl who grew up in the suburbs, mine is fairly similar. But minus the Creed, yuck. You get extra points for Coal Chamber, PM5K, Moby, Dropkick Murphys, and Bush.

Where my playlist differs –

The Faint – Southern Bells in London Sing
Britney Spears – If You Seek Amy
The Caesars – Jerk It Out
Freezepop – Less Talk More Rokk
Gwen Stefani – Don’t Get It Twisted
Lady Gaga – Beautiful, Dirty, Rich
Les Savy Fav – Yawn,Yawn,Yawn
MC Chris – DQ Blizzard
Mindless Self Indulgence – Bomb This Track
NoFX – Leaving Jesusland
Tool – 46 & 2

We have similar taste, you should look into some of it :)

Barry Manilow.

I’ve been in the habit of listening to This American Life (Chicago Public Radio) podcasts while on the treadmill. Engaging for the brain, and keeps the treadmill boredom to a minimum. I’m used to working out hard though, and don’t find that I need much motivation from music.

I had been listening to The Splendid Table (another NPR podcast about good food) but it usually made me too hungry afterwards. (Pavlov effect – salivating during workouts!)

I (who am female) go through all my hip hop and choose the songs with the most motivating beats. 50 Cent and Eminem feature prominently in my playlists. Especially Eminem. He’s so angry.

I know my friends and I have very embarrassing workout playlists…for early 20s suburbian white girls, we listen to a lot of oldies and or hardcore rap. They go well together.

Courtney June 16, 2009 at 9:58 AM

If I’m not watching the news or That 70′s Show (since the treadmills have TVs attached at my gym), I am usually listening to pop/dance mixes. I have a 90s dance mix that includes some hilarious classics like Madonna, Ace of Base and Will Smith. Sometimes I listen to comedy cds, like Dane Cook, because they keep my brain paying attention to the plot line and not the number on the treadmill.

lol! As I read your playlist I was thinking “this guy has to be close to my age.” Sure enough, you’re within 3 years.

Cat June 16, 2009 at 10:16 AM

Also, LOVE that Airborne Toxic Event song. Haven’t met many people who’ve heard of them.

Lisa June 16, 2009 at 10:22 AM

jock jams, techno, and reggaeton

Tamara June 16, 2009 at 10:27 AM

Radio 4, Death From Above 1979, Wu-Tang Clan, Bee Gees, [old] Rod Stewart, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Feist, Foals, Q And Not U, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Chin Up Chin Up, !!! (Chk Chk Chk), Peter Bjorn and John… There are probably a few that I’m missing, but those are the ones that tend to keep me going most of the time.

my favorite is Girl Talk. You can download the Album “Feed the Animals” for any donation you like (including free). just google it. The entire album is random samples, no more that 30 seconds each, thrown together. it is genius and totally keeps your interest on the treadmill. he mixes together motown, rock, rap, pop, everything! it is worth a listen. makes me giggle and keeps a smile on my face.

Tyler June 16, 2009 at 11:12 AM

I have a lot more female readers than I thought!

Britty June 16, 2009 at 11:19 AM

Two words: Lady GaGa. Couldn’t be more gym perfect. Now if only I could listen to music while swimming laps…

Mike June 16, 2009 at 11:51 AM

I’m not a female reader, but I have a few suggestions for additions to your playlist.

Check out Street Sweeper Social Club, especially the song Promenade, the CD just came out today, but I saw them live 2 weeks ago, and they rock!

And of course, Nine Inch Nails always gets me going. The newest CD is free, and 1,000,000 and Discipline are great songs from it to exercie to.

Lesley June 16, 2009 at 12:15 PM

Rage Against The Machine, Notorious BIG, James Brown, Queens of the Stone Age

Coryad June 16, 2009 at 2:11 PM

Ooooo I’m glad I’m not the only one listening to Britney LOL! I like music that is upbeat, so anything dance related. Lady Gaga is another good one. I have many 80′s songs, some Linkin Park, The Doors … I need to be able to keep a beat when I run! God forbid my iPod battery dies, I’m screwed and the workout takes FOREVER.

Tyler June 16, 2009 at 3:59 PM

I’m definitely taking some of these songs/artists to the gym. Thanks guys!

bossymommy June 16, 2009 at 5:40 PM

Barry, too? Awesome!!

jgilberg June 16, 2009 at 8:09 PM

Freezepop! And Ladytron! Also, I likes me some Modest Mouse too.

Tanya June 17, 2009 at 8:59 AM

Loving the playlist – some are on mine and others are new to me – except that I don’t think that I could roll with Barry Manilow bossymommy :-)

k. June 18, 2009 at 6:29 AM

I gotta say, I have about half those songs on my iPod, and I’m a 47 year old mother of three (who clearly thinks she’s an angry 23 year old from the suburbs…) I also listen to a lot of old school punk rock and indie stuff. That said, I go back and forth between music and podcasts. I like This American Life and Adam Carolla’s show a lot.

Mer June 30, 2009 at 11:28 AM

I listen to a lot of techno: Boys Noize is AWESOME to run to. I really enjoy Daft Punk as well – particularly the stuff from Alive 2007.

Megan June 30, 2009 at 1:28 PM

Alkaline Trio.

MC Hammer’s “You Can’t Touch This,” and mostly the same stuff you do.

Ravin Penkar July 1, 2009 at 2:59 PM

Great list…we have a very similar taste in music :). Good luck with your goal.

Those are some awesome play lists! After working out for 190 minutes last Friday, I realized I need a longer workout music playlist for my workout pledges.

I’ll use some of these songs to make them!
