Elliptical & Treadmill Workout Pledge

July 14, 2009 | Workout Pledges

Hello, Consumerist. I have a workout pledge for you.

Since most of you are new to the site, here’s how workout pledges go. Basically, I allow my readers (that’s you!) to determine how long I sweat at the gym. It isn’t as simple as you telling me to workout (hey jerk, workout for 3 hours!), you have to complete one (or all) of the small tasks I outline below:

1. Post a comment: +15 seconds. Just comment to this post. It can be a “Good luck!” or it could be your life story. I’d be happy to read both.

2. Follow me on twitter: +30 seconds. I like to tweet.

3. Follow me on Facebook: +30 seconds. Join my new Facebook page and get absolutely nothing of value other than adding 30 seconds to my workout.

4. Subscribe to RSS feed: +45 seconds. I’m not really sure what RSS means.

5. Link to 344Pounds.com = +1 minute. You can link to me from your blog, Facebook, Twitter page, Digg, Plenty of Fish profile, etc. For every link I receive, I’ll workout 45 seconds.

Unlike previous workout pledges, this is not just for one machine — this is for two, the elliptical and the treadmill. If the total time for this pledge comes to 75 minutes for example, I’ll spend that time on both machines. I’ll complete 75 minutes on the treadmill, take a short break, then get on the elliptical!

I’ll upload pictures to twitter as I workout, too. I’ll go through with the pledge Saturday morning in case anybody wants to be online to cheer me on.

Or not. I’d be sleeping, personally.

You have until 7 PM (Eastern) Wednesday to add time to my workout. So, if you want to add me to your blogroll, RSS feed, Facebook, etc and make me earn your friendship, you have about 30 hours to do so.

It’s up to you. How long will I workout Saturday?

This has ended! This Saturday (UPDATED: Friday night at 7 PM) I will be working out for 93.4 minutes on BOTH machines.  Be on twitter Friday night for live updates!

Congrats on your progress! Keep up the good work.

Juncti July 14, 2009 at 12:23 PM

Just saw your post on Consumerist. I’m like wait, I recognize this guy, then realize you posted an updated pic there and not here lol

Since I’ve been on the RSS(Really Simple Syndication) since the last post on Consumerist, I’m posting here and I’ll hit the twitter link as well.

Keep it going

Tyler July 14, 2009 at 12:28 PM

Thanks guys!

Will July 14, 2009 at 12:40 PM

Run, Tyler, Run!

I’ve got a feeling you’re going to be on those machines a loooong time this week, lol.

ASD July 14, 2009 at 12:52 PM

Yoni Freedhoff July 14, 2009 at 12:59 PM

Hi Tyler,

I hope my blog post on you yesterday buys you some time!

All the best,
Yoni

Casey July 14, 2009 at 1:14 PM

Bam! +15 seconds.

Nick R July 14, 2009 at 1:31 PM

+15 seconds … also, I have a request. SMILE in your after pics. Look at the new before/after… you almost look happier at 100+ lbs, and we all know that’s not true. Don’t mourn the loss! :)

BooBee July 14, 2009 at 1:41 PM

Hey jerk, run for 3 hours!! LOL! (sorry, I had to)

Cody July 14, 2009 at 1:43 PM

I second the smiling. You have done wonderful things and should be happy, keep up the good work.

S. July 14, 2009 at 1:54 PM

You rock! :-)

I have a relative who is interested in trying to lose weight. However, he has knee problems that prevent him from being able to run, and perhaps do eliptical and exercise bike. What kinds of exercise can he do?

Tyler July 14, 2009 at 2:08 PM

Enough with the smiling :)

I’m in the gym, I have my serious face on!

Pancake — I’d suggest the elliptical.
Funkright — Thanks :)
Yoni — It certainly does, thanks.

Rye July 14, 2009 at 2:18 PM

Good job, Tyler! Keep up the awesome work! You’re looking great!

Becky July 14, 2009 at 2:56 PM

Hey Tyler, any update on your running goals? As a sorta-new runner you’re inspiring me!! Have you looked at the Nike + Sportband that comes out tomorrow? Pretty rad… http://gizmodo.com/5313806/nike%252B-sportband-2009-reviewed-verdict-saves-money-on-an-ipod

Sandra July 14, 2009 at 3:25 PM

LOL…I was just going to say…Wow Tyler, you look FABULOUS but where is your smile?” when I read the above comments.

But the Fabulous comment still stands. You have muscles!!

And excellent workout pledge. I love it!!

Britty July 14, 2009 at 3:30 PM

wahoo +30 seconds for me becoming a fan of you on Facebook. After all of these challenges I’m now following you on EVERYTHING. lol.

james July 14, 2009 at 3:58 PM

I saw this on consumerist and I’m subscribing. it’s good to see a real person’s progress; a blog that isn’t an ad for some product or miracle juice. I’m about where you were, and I hope that I’ll be able to apply what you’ve done and learned to my own situation.

Tyler July 14, 2009 at 5:06 PM

I really appreciate all the kind comments and additional workout minutes! If you ever need to reach me, feel free to contact me.

Sarah July 14, 2009 at 4:46 PM

Go, Tyler, go Tyler….

I am not down with the Facebook & already subscribe to your feed, so this comment will have to do.

Stephanie July 14, 2009 at 4:54 PM

Awesome job Tyler. You have inspired me over the last few months. I look forward to your continued success!

leslie July 14, 2009 at 5:46 PM

you can do ittttttt!

i follow you on twitter too!
and I subscribe to your blog in my google reader!

run run run!

Tyler July 14, 2009 at 5:53 PM

I bought some No Bake Peanut Butter Cups today, Leslie. Seriously. It’s your fault.

Wes July 14, 2009 at 6:57 PM

Dude… Good work.
I just hit the 90lbs lost mark (from 366lbs in 11/08) yesterday myself and I’m in complete agreement with your advice to others.
It’s not as hard as people make it out to be. After you do this long enough (about 2 weeks for me) you get cranky if you DON’T go to the gym.

Level 18 on the elliptical,
Wes

Tyler July 14, 2009 at 6:59 PM

Nice. I’ll challenge you to a pledge one day. Level 20 :)

Greg Glockner July 14, 2009 at 6:59 PM

Tyler, you rock! I lost a lot of weight 10 years ago and have kept it off, and I agree with your philosophy – that you simply have to find a combination of exercise and food that creates a calorie deficit. Keep up the great work – maybe we’ll run a marathon together someday.

Wes July 14, 2009 at 7:07 PM

You got it man. It is ON like Donkey Kong!

Kelly July 14, 2009 at 7:25 PM

Yeah, I’m adding my 15 second comment. I’ll have to poke around and see if I can add you on Facebook too — anything to make your workout longer. I can’t wait until you start doing circuit training and then see how long we can make you do that!

South Beach Steve July 14, 2009 at 7:59 PM

Alright, I am following you on twitter now, I have made a comment here, and I am linking to this post tonight on my blog – sweat it up! :-)

Tyler July 14, 2009 at 8:08 PM

Kelly, Steve, and Greg – THANKS!

keith roz July 14, 2009 at 8:33 PM

Tyler
I am on a weight loss goal myself. I really appreciate your website thanks for all the info. I will continue to come back and check on your progress. Good luck on the long workout…I hope its long…POST PEOPLE… ;)

wrathofnino July 14, 2009 at 10:22 PM

Good luck!! :D +15! WOOT!

J July 14, 2009 at 10:30 PM

Added on FB, Twitter and RSS plus a comment, that’s what an additional 2 minutes? Keep up the good work, you are an inspiration.

Soupskin July 14, 2009 at 10:40 PM

Between here, Twitter, friending and posting a link on FB, you now get an extra 2:15.

Keep up the good work. I’ll be tacking on an extra 2:15 myself tomorrow. You are quite the inspiration.

teresa July 14, 2009 at 11:44 PM

Just found your site and am very impressed by your progress. Here’s 1 minute and 15 seconds from me!

Barry July 15, 2009 at 1:04 AM

Go Tyler. I’m just now starting my own workout project. I’m @ 262 and I want to get down to around 200-210. You’re an inspiration bro. Keep it up.

Ariana July 15, 2009 at 10:08 AM

I followed a link to your blog from Cheap, Healthy, Good. I’m really impressed by your weight loss journey. The post about the team mom not recognizing you made me laugh. From the pictures you posted, you really do look like a different person!
Keep up the great work!

Tyler July 15, 2009 at 12:17 PM

Thanks so much guys! The number is getting up there — I’ll post the final amount I’ll be working out later on today!

Jer July 15, 2009 at 12:27 PM

Way to go! Your progress is amazing.

Kevin July 15, 2009 at 1:33 PM

add 2 minutes for me!!! I now follow you on Twitter, Facebook and count the link on my blog.

You can do it!!!

Sandy July 15, 2009 at 2:17 PM

I hear weight loss occurs faster for people named Tyler in Tyler, TX. They keep the weight off longer too. Just saying…

Matt July 15, 2009 at 3:53 PM

Keep up the great work, you helped open my eyes.

Cole July 15, 2009 at 5:33 PM

Tyler, you’ve come such a long way from when the Consumerist first covered your story and I have to say I am very proud of how far you’ve come! You’re really inspiring a lot of people! I too decided to get back into the gym recently. I hope to lose about 40 lbs from my starting weight. So far, I’m down 8 but just pulled a muscle in my back, so I’ll be out for a while. Here’s another 15 secs!

Cole July 15, 2009 at 5:34 PM

P.S. I also second the smiling.. your before pic is so much different than your after pic.. I assume you’re happier now, so show it off! Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do anyway according to every weight loss gimmick ever? Is this your way of showing that your method actually works? hehe

joe July 16, 2009 at 12:57 AM

Very motivating, keep up the good work!
