Week 29: Weigh-in Results

August 12, 2009 | Weigh-in Results

Yo.  Yo.

233-6

August 12 weight: 233.6
August 05 weight: 234.4
July 29 weight: 239.2
July 22 weight: 238.8
July 15 weight: 241.4

I’ve lost 0.8 pounds in the last 7 days and 110.6 pounds in 29 weeks. Want stats from past weeks? Check out my entire 29 week weight loss progress.

I don’t enjoy this yo-yo weight loss.  One week I lose 4.8 pounds, the next 0.8

It’s not good for morale.

The frustrating part is that I watched my calories and worked out with the same intensity and motivation this week as I did the week I lost 4.8 pounds.

I guess it’s time to boost my intensity.

So, for every comment about this post I’ll do 30 seconds on the treadmill this evening at the gym.  And tomorrow.   And Friday.  I’ll stay on the treadmill for (0:30 x # of comments) every day until next Wednesday.  You don’t have to add me as a friend on twitter or Facebook like usual, nor do you have to link to me.   This workout pledge is much less gimmick and much more treadmill.

All I want is your support — just a comment — it’s worth 30 seconds.

We’ll see what the scale has to say about that.

Update 8/14: New comments will no longer add time to my workout.  For the next several nights, I’ll be on the treadmill for 56 minutes (112 comments).  I will post on twitter during my workouts!

I know it’s hard not to see as big of a drop as you’d like, but try not to get discouraged! .8 lost is still that much less than you weighed last week!

This is a pattern for me too. I’ll have weeks with very small losses, then a big WHOOSH. You see this more as you get closer to your goal weight. Upping the intensity is a great idea. Adding resistance training will help too. You can do it!

You know, it happens to me a lot, too. One week of huge loss, followed by a week that almost stands still. Drives me crazy, because, like you say, it’s not like we doing anything different, lol. I just roll with it. We’re in this for the long haul.

It’s about time you take your running outside! You’ve got a marathon to get ready for! (Hey – I’m totally loving my Nike+ SportBand. Taking it out again tonight to try seven miles.)

Keep up the good work. Maybe your body is starting to adapt to the workouts you are doing? Try throwing your body a curveball, try something new in the gym. Do they have a rowing machine? That’s a workout you will not soon forget. Or you could try some interval work and really crank up the intensity, even while staying on the treadmill. It’s key to keep you body guessing.

Good work, keep it up.

Now that you’ve lost a significant amount of weight, try not to look at the week by week so much. Your body has natural monthly rhythms which can make your weight fluctuate. Concentrate on the monthly numbers and your healthy lifestyle.

And +30 seconds. Have a great workout!! :-)

Tamikka August 12, 2009 at 9:38 AM

When you only have small weight loss, think of it as loosing fat, but also Gaining Muscle. I’m sure you can reach your goal!

no add another 30s!

Tamara August 12, 2009 at 10:08 AM

It’s perfectly normal to see a smaller loss (or no loss or even a small gain) after a big loss the previous week. I know you may find it discouraging, but to be perfectly honest: get used to it. As a previous comment said, your body needs to play catch-up. Some weeks it’s ready to let go of the weight, and other weeks it’s not. You’ll notice this as you get closer to your goal weight. And as you get closer, you won’t see big losses as much and the speed at which you lose will slow down considerably. It’s a reality you’ll need to face and accept.

And small losses don’t always mean “workout like a maniac” either. Some weeks you may need to eat more food to make up for extreme calorie burning and other weeks you need to ease up on activity because your body is tired. Your motivation is incredible, but you also need to also practice achieving balance week to week, especially if you want to be successful at maintaining your loss after goal.

beej August 12, 2009 at 10:10 AM

At least you’re headed in the right direction! Keep it up–and have fun on that treadmill! :)

Reply

Sandra August 12, 2009 at 10:10 AM

Wow, lots of comments already. I guess people really want to make you work this week. :-) If I write two comments, does that count as a minute??

But seriously, your body knows what its doing. You are at a point in your weight loss journey where your body has stabilized out a bit, and you are down to your last 50 pounds. Typically, it takes longer to lose these last pounds. Keep putting in the work. You WILL see the results.

AND, I think I will join you on your quest this week. I will do those extra minutes with you on the treadmill after my elliptical workout each day.

Deanna August 12, 2009 at 10:10 AM

Have fun! The treadmill kicked my a$$ yesterday. Btw, have you ever posted a treadmill “routine”? I’d be interested to see what other people are doing on the treadmill. I mix it up everytime I go to the gym. 30 mins elliptical, 15 stairclimber, 15 min. treadmill…or something similar to that set-up. I’m super bored with it though. Anyways, good job on your loss, you are really inspirational.

I’m sure you’re aware of this but your water weight fluctuates wildly based on the amount of salt you eat- maybe this week you are just retaining water. Or you could be putting on more muscle, which weighs more than fat. I’ve read that you can only possibly lose 1-2 lbs of fat a week- the rest is fluctuations in fluids. Instead, judge by how you feel and how your clothes fit. But it can’t hurt to kick up teh instensity. Do I get more seconds for a long comment? Good luck! I am so proud of you.

Now that you’ve more or less completed the huge weekly losses that only someone 300+ can make, you might want to look into trending your weight to get a more accurate representation of what’s going on, ala The Hacker’s Diet:
http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/e4/signalnoise.html

It’s been extremely helpful for me.

Oh, and – Another 30 Seconds! ;)

Hey Tyler,

Don’t loose heart buddy – I’m just at the start of my weight loss journey and I’m finding it hard to keep on track but reading your achievements really helps….

It’s because of you I can now do more than a minute on the elliptical! Seriously, when I first got on one my legs burned so badly I just gave up in under a minute but seeing your results gave me the motivation to work through it and I can now do 20 minutes! Watching the calorie counter rise give such a rush.

Keep it up! Oh yeah and that’s 30 seconds you owe me now!!! Don’t worry though I’m going to do something similar on my blog so you’ll have chance to get your own back :)

Keep going- your weight loss journey reminds me of hiking up a mountain- in some spots, you think you aren’t making any progress but you keep going up and up despite boulders, washed out trails, downed trees. It might be taking longer than expected but you can see the top of the mountain- the majority of the work is behind you.

Keep it up- you are an inspiration to your readers in cyberspace!

It is a marathon not a sprint. Once you build some muscle and permanently change your eating and activity habbits you will be able to relax a little. Trust me, it is nice not having to obsess about it 24X7. While it is very important to have a goal, you have to listen to your body. You will reach a point that when your tummy says your hungry, your body actually needs to eat. Unlike all those years of constantly feeling hungry because you stuffed yourself at every meal.

Reply

Wes August 12, 2009 at 4:00 PM

Tyler, I know it sucks, but it happens man.

I firmly believe that stress plays a big part in it. I quit smoking 3 weeks ago and I gained 6 pounds in 2 weeks. Take a deep breath (like I do, now that I can) and just amp up the intensity.

I’ve also found that on occasion, it helps to slightly increase your caloric intake (200-300 extra) for a few days to shock your body into working a bit harder to burn off the extra energy.

Still at level 17, BTW
Wes

p.s. what are you averaging as far as RPM’s go on the elliptical? I’m trying to maintain between 60 and 65 consistently.

Joe August 12, 2009 at 6:25 PM

You shouldn’t refer to this type of weight loss as yo-yo weight loss so as to avoid confusion with yo-yo dieting. The concept of yo-yo’ing is going up and down and up and down. Your weight (except for the one week) consistently goes down so there is no yo-yo effect.

Keep up the good work – it’ll pay off in the end.

Its going to become more difficult to lose weight the lighter you get. Its frustrating, but your body doesn’t burn calories as easily once you weigh less. Whenever I’ve lost less than I expected I take my measurements to see what is going on. Usually I DID lose inches, just not pounds. Muscles are never a bad thing! Oh, and drop and give me 30! :P
