Week 31: Weigh-in Results

August 26, 2009 | Weigh-in Results

Living out of a suitcase is bad for progress.

232-pounds

August 26 weight: 232.8
August 19 weight: 233.2
August 12 weight: 233.6
August 05 weight: 234.4
July 29 weight: 239.2

I’ve lost 0.4 pounds in the last 7 days and 111.4 pounds in 31 weeks. Want stats from past weeks? Check out my entire 31 week weight loss progress.

My diet has been really poor over the last week (unless value meals are the foundation of a healthy diet?).  My posting has been few and far between.  My stress levels are extremely high.  I won’t have a gym to call home in 4 days.

Moving into a new house is tough.

We’ll be completely moved into the new house by this Saturday night — or die trying.  That’s when the 17 foot Uhaul truck is due back and there’s absolutely no way I plan on paying another $29.95 for the luxury of moving another day.

Everything should be be back to normal next week.

In the meantime, I’m still looking for some good snake oil.  Apply within.

You’re STILL losing weight though so don’t be so tough on yourself… keep it up, I bet you will lose A LOT of weight the first week you get back on track

Moving is never fun.

Stay strong, it’ll be over soon.

Tyler, I don’t have snake oil for you. What I do have is some free advice.

Your weight loss has slowed to the point where a weekly update is no longer providing us with an accurate understanding of how your weight is currently trending. If your body is retaining water on the day you weigh in, you’re not getting an accurate picture of potential loss.

We need an everyday weight measurement and then we can use some data smoothing to take out the aberrations in each day. This will provide you with really good daily feedback on your diet (after we get a few data points).

We also need a daily calorie count again. As much as you may not want to admit it, diet is substantial portion of your success and while exercise is providing benefit, it’s the diet that’s driving this whole thing.

Check out http://www.myweightracker.com and get started collecting data.

As you’re finding out, weight loss is really simple. You eat less, your blood sugar drops because you are hungry, you refuse to continue eating, your body drops your metabolism to compensate, you STILL refuse to over-eat and finally your body burns fat as a backup to power itself.

If you eat less calories than your body needs, you’re going to lose weight. Exercise increases the amount of calories your body needs and should speed up weight loss.

I think you would benefit from reading The Hacker’s Diet (http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/). It’s not a fad diet, it provides the laymen with a mathematical understanding of how weight loss works. It is surprisingly accurate and will help you understand why you were obese, why you’re losing weight now, and how to develop a maintainence plan.

Good luck.

Thanks for the links, Jason. You always give me a lot of information to digest — I really appreciate it.

I’ve heard about The Hacker’s Diet quite a bit, I’m definitely going to checkup on it when I get some time to sit at a computer more than a few minutes.

Moving is stressful but you are still moving on the scale. Keep going!

I think the fact that the scale is still going down, despite the fact that you are having to live off of the drive thru, speaks volumes for your determination and dedication. Did you know that people rank moving second only to death in the family as one of life’s most stressful/traumatic events? Moving is the worst. It sucks! Be proud of yourself for not gaining 5 pounds–I would have!

I didn’t know that — but I believe it. So many utilities to turn off turn on, moving trucks, movers, living out of boxes for a while, adapting to new neighbors, yard, house…

Argh.

It is still at least a loss. Keep fruit at your desk and bring it with you in your car. When you get hungry, eat the apple or whatever. It may help you avoid popping in for a burger.

Aaaaaaand back to me pimping yoga.

Just google yoga and stress and you’ll see what I mean. And really, it is harder than it looks, you will break a sweat. Even a short 20 min stint of sun salutations may make you feel better.

But isn’t yoga for girls?

Just kidding — I’ll do some “basic” yoga today at lunch.

Even if you’re eating fast food, there are bad choices and there are healthier choices. I know that a lot of people say that the NVs given on fast food websites are probably not very accurate, but it’s really better than just going willy nilly and ordering whatever. Also, it’s obvious in many cases – a burger smothered in cheese obviously has a higher amount of fat calories than a grilled chicken pita or something.
Also, I think you have to realize that you’re in a much healthier zone now and your body does not have as much extra weight to burn off. It is going to be slow from now on and that is something you’ll have to deal with. What you really don’t want is an injury or worse that will sideline you, so don’t overdo it to compensate. Remember, you’re doing this for your health, and you’ve made a lot of progress. Don’t fall into the trap of unhealthy thinking on this.

Keep up the good work. You started on this journey to be a better participant in your family. Paying attention to your family in this stressful time fulfills that goal just as well as loosing 100+ lbs. :-)

Have you considered buying an exercise machine? A decent elliptical can be had in the $400 range if you buy it new and you might be able to get a deal on craigslist. This would solve your gym problem. I just bought a bike, but it is only effective if the weather cooperates and I’ll need a different plan for when the weather gets cold.

I have considered it, but our new house doesn’t as much as room as our current one (it’s a bungalow). We have limited space in the new place, we wouldn’t have enough room.

It’s a good idea, but I’m going to have to join a gym.

I spent years biking in the winter season climates of NY Adirondacks and Long Island Greenbelt Trail. Both on and off trail. just get weather-appropriate clothing and gear which can be had online or at certain bike stores.

Hey losing ANY weight when you are in a stressful situation rocks! Good job :) I have no snake oil for you either, just a lot of support and admiration.

You hang in there, Tyler. Don’t beat yourself up while you’re moving. Soon as you settle, just recommit to the program. Those value meals will have to go, though, lol. Unless you’re getting the Happy Meals with skim milk and apples . . .

You are in the process of moving? And eating fast food? And you STILL lost (albeit a small amount) of weight?

Take heart- you didn’t gain weight.

You have a lot of support from me and my husband- dozens of moves in our lives and yes, it is an upheaval and stressful.

Just do your best until the routine settles down.

My husband has struggled with plateaus in weight loss himself. He’s lost nearly 40 lbs and when he hits those plateaus, accepts that they are there and he just keeps on with the exercise and sensible eating, knowing eventually he’ll lose some more.

Keep telling youself- you did lose some. And your long term weight loss- amazing.

Enjoy your new house.

As everyone has said, moving is stressful and you’re still losing weight, so you must be doing something right. I think life is life and you can’t expect every week to be ideal for focusing on your goals. You have to accept there will be challenges and look forward to getting past them without backtracking. And you’re doing that. So pat yourself on the back and keep your chin up. This is good practice for the Holidays – when bad foods are everywhere and all the family and work commitments interfere with the workout schedule.

Tyler, I came across your blog the other night. To say it inspired me is an understatement. I’m starting my life over again tomorrow, a healthy and more active one. I’m the same age as you, 23. I’m 380 lbs presently on my way down to 190. I appreciate you sharing your journey and I hope you achieve you’re goal. I’m going to keep a blog as well and track my meals, and progress.
