Nike Shox Turbo Running Shoes

October 30, 2009

Daddy’s got a new pair of (running) shoes.

I’ve needed new running shoes since July, after literally running through my old Nike Katanas.  After seeking advice from readers, reading countless reviews of running shoes online, browsing local shoe stores and contacting Nike, Adidas, and New Balance directly, I decided to settle on these babies:

Meet my new running shoes:  Nike Shox Turbos

I was and am extremely disappointed in the shoe stores, both national chains and mom and pops, that I visited locally.  Living in Columbia, South Carolina doesn’t give you a whole lot of options to begin with, but the stores I did visit were disappointing.  Service and selection were both poor and I couldn’t find anybody in the area (or within 100 miles) that performed gait anaylsis.

After looking at local shoes stores for nearly three months I stopped looking offline and went online.  I finally pulled the trigger last week and bought these Nike Shox Turbos from a nice lady on eBay for $79.95 with free shipping.

No sales tax, either.

As soon as I tried them on I know I made a good decision.  They’re wonderful.  I have a wide foot (size 13) and while I don’t think these are running shoes designed for overweight people, they sure feel like it.  They’re not tight like my Katanas, but at the same time they’re very snug and almost “form fitting.”

Let’s see how long it takes to run through these.

Those shoes look awesome. They are going to see a lot of miles, so take care of them!

Tyler October 30, 2009 at 11:17 AM

They’ll go at least two more miles tonight!

nice kicks!!

Tyler October 30, 2009 at 11:18 AM

Thanks, do you have a sweet pair?

Did you buy a 1/2 size larger – I know that someone was recommending that in a earlier post?

Tyler October 30, 2009 at 11:18 AM

I did, they fit snug.

Very nice! I grabbed a new pair of the Lunar Glides a few weeks ago, and like them a lot, too. Keep us posted on how these wear!

Color? Size?

These look awesome. I’ve got plantars fasciitis in my left foot and am always on the hunt for a comfy shoe. I want some!

Save up and buy some! Christmas is right around the corner, you never know who might buy you some.

Then again, I went months with holes in my shoes. It was embarrassing being filmed at the gym by WLTX (CBS affiliate) and them showing shots of my shoes with holes. Oh well.

I hope these work great for you! I am sorry you had a bad experience with your stores there. I know it is a bit of a drive, but if you are ever in Charleston or Charlotte, TrySports is the place to go. I cannot say too many good things about them. Even if I lived in Columbia, it would be worth the drive for me to go see them. Honestly.

How many miles did you get on your last pair? I recently got fitted into a pair of Asics – and started logging my weekly runs so I could track my mileage on the shoes. I was told to expect 4-500 Miles or so out of them, but suspect I’ll get slightly less due to my weight.

It’s hard to say as I was on the elliptical for the first 100 pounds I lost. I certainly didn’t walk/run more than a couple hundred miles, but who’s to say how far I went in the elliptical.

All I know is that they didn’t last for more than 6 months, but that’s also with pretty much daily vigorous physical activity.

I visit Charleston every so often as I’m from there, but I never wanted to just stop by a store and see how it was. I’ve been burnt at every local shoe store in Columbia, I was getting disheartened and was really determined to just buy online toward the end.

Woot! I purchased a pair of Nikes very similar to yours, but I purchased the Nike+ to go along with the Nike + hardware that links to my itouch. I was able to customize mine by picking all the colors and putting a personal ID on the back. I LOVE THEM. They motivate me every time I wear them. And I only allow myself to wear them when I am exercising. No shopping in my Nike + sneakers!! :-D

BTW, my personal ID which is displayed in BRIGHT PINK on the back of my sneakers is 150 (my goal weight – on the left foot) and DO IT (on the right foot).

I wholly applaud your purchase!

I looked on Nike’s website and considered doing the whole ID thing as well — it is really a nice feature to customize every color and aspect of your shoe, plus add an ID. At the end of the day though, these shoes were $80 without an ID, and Nike online would’ve taken 2-4 weeks plus $120.

Maybe next time I buy shoes I’ll come to you for the extra $40 :)

LOL You are right. They did cost more and I did have to wait for them.

It was nice to meet you at HHAC’s Big Loser. So glad you’ve joined us.

I need new shoes and was going to try Fleet Feet in Harbison. Somebody told me they did gait analysis, that they make you run on a treadmill and give you individualized help. (And the Biggest Loser gave me a coupon for there.)

Your new shoes look great. Keep us posted.

Those are some fun shoes. I’m still rocking some New Balance shoes in the gym, but have Vibrams that I use for my outside walks.

I can’t wait to hear that you ran through these, too!

Those shoes look pretty cool! I haven’t really tried any shoes with springs in them, haha!

I’m looking for a new pair of shoes and was thinking of looking into the Nike Free line of shoes (http://barefootrunningshoes.org/nike-free-shoes/)… When you were looking into shoes did you look into these at all?

They look pretty good, especially the Nike Free 5.0…

Josh November 11, 2009 at 1:32 AM

Nice kicks! Just to let you know though, Fleet Feet does gait analysis and will put you in a shoe made for your specific foot and running pattern. They fixed my shin splints and sore knees! It’s off of harbison next to carolina ale house and cold stone creamery (I know, how ironic, right?)

ProGait November 18, 2009 at 6:58 AM

Gait Analysis is great for runners and I would highly recommend it as it does make a difference to the way you run and walk. A Gait Analysis can also lead to the treatment of many foot conditions. Plus a good, fitted pair of running shoes makes running much more comfortable. Great post!
