Using Twitter to Count Calories

November 14, 2009

I’m done counting calories on 344 Pounds.  I found a new way to count and track the calories I consume on a daily basis:  tweets through Twitter.

twitter.com/344food

After a week of posting tweets of what I eat during the day I’m more than confident I’ll stick to using twitter as a food log indefinitely.

I post my calories consumed nearly live — usually right after a meal.  It’s not that much of a hassle since I can tweet calories through my phone, e-mail, or directly on twitter.com and it has honestly been the easiest method of tracking calories I’ve tried.  I’ve tested all the typical calorie counters online and on my phone and I just want something simple, easily accessible, and free.

Twitter is all of that and more.

So, go check out my new twitter account 344food.  You’ll see that with the exception of Friday, I stayed well below my 2,000 self-imposed calories a day.

The new scale seems to be liking the result.

This is an awesome idea! I’m definitely going to be keeping a close eye on you!

Good, you should!

How about posting pics of the food you eat too?

Tyler November 16, 2009 at 8:08 AM

Posting tweets takes up a lot of time as it is, but I’m sure I’ll occasionally post pictures of meals through twitter.

how do you organize the tweets or do you later?

Tyler November 16, 2009 at 8:08 AM

Oh, I don’t. I simply keep a log of what I eat and that’s that — if I want to look back at a day, it isn’t too terribly hard.

Hey Tyler. Can you add a hashtag (#344calories or something like that) on your tweets? That way we can group them (and you can group them in the future as well).

Great job :)

Jason November 14, 2009 at 10:05 PM

My bad. You do it all under a separate account. No hashtag needed!

Tyler November 16, 2009 at 8:10 AM

Nope, no hashtag needed. :)

I didn’t want to do it under the same account, since some people don’t care too much about the calorie counting. I know it can get annoying if that’s the case.

I agree…I started a few days (and I follow you!) and I enjoy the ease of tracking…I also enjoy seeing what everyone is eating…good for ideas and such! Keeps me motivated. I’m @mylifetake8 if you wanna track me too!

Tyler November 16, 2009 at 8:10 AM

Thanks Craig, I’ll definitely keep an eye on you!

I went looking for an application to automatically make a proper log of twitter diary. There is one! Check out http://www.tweetwhatyoueat.com/

I did check that application out, and while it’s simple, the way I have it setup now through my phone and e-mail is the simplest of them all!

Hey; I just wanted to drop you a quick line. I’m sure you get this all the time, but I just wanted to say it as well. You are truly an inspiration. I lost a lot of weight a few years back, gained a fair amount back (not all, thank God), and I’ve been hovering around the same weight for a long time. Always saying “gonna start tomorrow,” etc. Even have a weight loss blog. Hasn’t done it yet. I’m flat out going to steal from you, and I’m going to tweet my meals, too. Anyhow, I just wanted to say thanks and best of luck to you. :)

Tyler November 16, 2009 at 8:12 AM

Thanks! Good luck on your progress, Jeremy. I’ll definitely add your blog to my favorites and keep track of your progress. Just take it day by day, you can do it.

Tyler November 16, 2009 at 8:11 AM

Odd, I don’t know why it didn’t show up in search!

Might I suggest, creating another page/section on your blog regarding your food/calorie counting and having your 344food twitter stream just on that page. Might be more trouble than it’s worth, but worth a shot.
