Stop Dreaming and Start Planning

April 22, 2010

I plan on owning a Mustang Convertible — maybe even this one.

I’m working toward my goal.  I think about it from time to time, but I don’t dwell and dream of the possibility — I dwell on what will get me there.  I’m working hard.  I’m working long hours.  My wife and I are saving.

I’m not dreaming.  I’m planning.

I also plan on taking care of my mother when she gets older.  She bought me my first computer and I plan on paying her back.   I haven’t forgotten what she has done for me.  I don’t dream of buying her a Rolls Royce and giving her a mansion, but I plan on making sure she doesn’t have to work past a certain age.  I plan on paying for any medicine or medical bills she might obtain.

I plan on making sure her lawn is always mowed.

We’re not talking about pie in the sky ideas here, but simple goals that can be accomplished with a lot of hard work and a little bit of planning.

I have more plans.  They include:

  • Allowing wife to stay at home and raise our children
  • Building an incredible amount of muscle
  • Teaching Natalee how to be an athlete (basketball, soccer, everything)
  • Learning how to dance
  • Writing a book

I don’t like dreaming.  Dreams will keep us happy and satisfied as we sit on the interstate every morning, waiting in traffic to only arrive an hour later at a job we hate.  We’ll do it for the next 40 years because we were too busy dreaming about winning the lottery and moving to the Bahamas.

We were too busy dreaming and not planning.

I dreamed for 23 years.  I dreamed my entire life about having a six pack, flexing big and strong muscles, being chased by the girls, etc — the dreams of an overweight teenage boy.  But, just like we’re not going to win the lottery, quit our job and move to the Bahamas, I wasn’t going to wake up one day and be shredded.  I was morbidly obese and it took years to reach 344 pounds — I wasn’t going to lose it all overnight.  Muscles aren’t grown like a beanstalk.

Meeting our goals requires planning, not dreaming.  Start planning.  Not tomorrow, but today.  Get started with whatever it is you want to do in life.

Share your plans with me in the comments below.

That sounds like a solid plan. Good luck, Alisha.

You’re right, you have to earn it. I wrote this blog post at midnight last night. I could have gone to bed, but I didn’t. I chose to put the work in, write another blog post, and hopefully reach a few more people who might be out there not quite motivated enough to start their weight loss journey yet.

I want people to know that now is the best time to start anything. If you have 100+ pounds to lose, the life awaiting is unbelievable.

Al April 22, 2010 at 7:04 AM

Still planning on getting that Harley and starting my own business.

Anyone know how you get your photo to appear? I am absolutely clueless!

Matt April 22, 2010 at 8:18 AM

Maybe you should *plan* to find out!

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Seriously, though..no idea.

Tyler – you should get this one and make it a convertible. http://www.ezradesigngroup.com/images/redmistcar1.jpg

Go to http://www.Gravatar.com

It’s a globally recognized avatar system. That’s how I got my photo to appear. Pretty cool, and free.

Tyler April 22, 2010 at 4:23 PM

There you go. Sorry I couldn’t respond faster!

I plan to run another half marathon this year, finish my certification as an MT next year and then run a full marathon. I plan to run at least one marathon a year thereafter until 40 – when I plan to start doing triathalons. I plan to work in a hospital as an MT while working towards becoming an SBB by the time a start triathalons!

Cat April 22, 2010 at 9:52 AM

Retire at 55 for starters. But the more recents plans include paying off credit cards and getting more active. MOre long term I want to rebuild a camero with my boys. I know nothing about cars but how hard can it be? :)

I am really tired of saying and hearing “when this happens, I will start x…. (fill in the blank). It’s all about baby steps!

sara April 22, 2010 at 11:26 AM

I plan to graduate from college in 7 weeks. Then, this summer, I plan to lose my last fifteen pounds and to donate a kidney to my father. After that, my husband and I plan to start a family, and I plan to be the best stay at home mother I can be. I am so excited.

Molly April 22, 2010 at 11:40 AM

I plan on being 170 pounds by the end of the summer. Funny thing is that I’ve always dreamed of what it is like to be skinny- now I don’t want to be skinny but healthy. I think dreaming of wanting myself to get in shape has helped to push myself that yea you can dream, but if you don’t DO- then nothing will happen and your dream will never come true. Work hard- it pays off.

Ps. Love the color of the mustang. I have always wanted one too. Maybe when your book comes out you can splurge on that mustang ;)

Tyler April 22, 2010 at 4:22 PM

That’s the plan. :)

Candal April 22, 2010 at 12:00 PM

I plan to stop denying the fact that I’m not even dreaming anymore, I’m making excuses.

I plan to weigh what a healthy 24 year old who happens to be 5’3″ tall should weigh. I plan to get back into my ‘skinny’ jeans. I plan to wear a bikini, some day, but some day soon. I plan on looking good in my wedding dress.

I read that if you write down your goals and see them everyday (on the bathroom mirror, on the fridge) you will accomplish them. I plan to do that, today.

Petchy April 22, 2010 at 12:00 PM

I have already achieved some of my plans – like reaching a normal BMI (just), running 5k in under 30 minutes, having a normal relationship with food, starting my own business and running it successfully… I have more plans though! I WILL run a 12.5k race (without walking parts of it) in July, and I WILL run a half marathon in 2011 if not before. I will learn to be happy with my body. I will find a wonderful guy and have a couple more children. I will move out of town to a nice house with a nice garden… Loooads of plans in other words :)

Tyler April 22, 2010 at 4:28 PM

I have some big goals in 2011, too. I’ll be posting them soon. It’s going to absolutely blow you away! :)

The Roly Poly Boy April 22, 2010 at 12:45 PM

First off, I will always be a dreamer. ALWAYS. But, that’s just me. Maybe a reason why I’m such a huge sci-fi geek as well, eh?

BUT, it’s what you do with your dreams. And, whether you take chances or not. I wouldn’t have my job at ESPN if I didn’t take the plunge way back when, same with my exercise passion Jiu-Jitsu.

Courage comes in all sorts of ways, big and small.

Love the entry, though, and know what you’re saying. You’ve got to take that step into the next part of your life, from dreamer to planner…I see that.

It’s still okay to dream, though!

Tyler April 22, 2010 at 4:20 PM

You know what I mean. It’s one thing to dream about being Han Solo, I dream about that all the time — but it’s another thing to dream about how you wish your life would turn out.

kate April 22, 2010 at 1:03 PM

Speaking of planning, how long do you plan to post your weight as you maintain?

Tyler April 22, 2010 at 4:19 PM

Who said anything about maintaining? I’m not going anywhere. I’m not going to have a maintenance weight for a while, I have a lot more work to do.

Rebekah April 22, 2010 at 1:31 PM

I want to be able to run with out my belly flapping up and down.
I want to go clothes shopping at the mall, in more then 1 store
I want to be debt free
I want more children…and to be healthy while being pregnant
I want to be able to pay for my children’s college

Thanks for the inpiration!

Jeff Fischer April 22, 2010 at 1:55 PM

I plan to wait till Tyler gets that Stang and ride around with him! :) Shelby’s are incredible!

Tyler April 22, 2010 at 4:18 PM

I’ve never ridden in a Shelby, just a Mustang — used to own one. I love every minute of it.

Julia April 22, 2010 at 2:20 PM

I plan on losing 30 pounds by mid-September.
I plan on getting a Master’s Degree in Counseling.
I plan on making more money so that when my boys go off to college I can help them financially.
I plan on moving this Summer.
I plan on calling home to Mom this week-end.
I just got a Summer job! (I work for the School District) and plan on working hard and paying my bills.

BossyMommy April 22, 2010 at 4:02 PM

I plan to ride the Rip Cord at Worlds of Fun in KC without worrying about the cord snapping in two.

I plan, in the next few seconds, to let you know that it’s bean”stalk.” I’m just sayin…

Tyler April 22, 2010 at 4:18 PM

I put beanstalk. What are you talking about?

Paul April 22, 2010 at 4:29 PM

I plan on taking care of myself for a change. I have always been one to care for others and that is why I went into nursing later in life…..

So my plan is to get off the couch…… Not only be inspired, but be an inspiration at some point…. and to fight this fight!!!

I also want to skydive… and at my current weight I can not….. so that is a plan as well.

Thanks for your inspiration!

Tara April 22, 2010 at 7:43 PM

Do a Marathon.
Do a Triathlon
Do an Ironman

Rinse Repeat and Teach others to follow!

Mom April 22, 2010 at 7:50 PM

Stephanie April 22, 2010 at 11:49 PM

I plan on doing a half marathon and one triathlon this year.
I want to get pregnant (fingers crossed) after i get a job when i move to the UK in a month.
