I haven’t been in a gym in two weeks. It feels like I haven’t showered or brushed my teeth for two weeks. Going to the gym has been a mandatory part of my routine for several years. Without it, I’ve felt like something has been missing in my life — my wife mentioned a couple of days ago that I needed to go back to the gym or “find a hobby or something.” I’ve been like a lost (but extremely busy) puppy over the last two weeks without burning (big) calories.
Tonight, I became whole once again.
Earlier today I joined a local gym called Fitness Zone, located a few miles from my house in Lugoff, South Carolina. With all due respect to Fitness Zone and its facilities, it’s a far cry from Hampton Hill, my old athletic club near downtown in Columbia. Fitness Zone is about 1/10th of the size of Hampton Hill with 1/10th of the machines/weights. The facilities of Fitness Zone are also older, as is the equipment found inside.
I live in the country now, though. Some things are just different in the country.
I missed Hampton Hill as I was signing on the dotted line tonight ($40/mo, $20 initial fee), but Fitness Zone is my only option. It is definitely a big change from what I’m used to (do I sound spoiled yet?), but I’m sure it’ll grow on me. It’s just change. I’ve dealt with a lot of changes lately: towns, banks, homes, utilities (T-Mobile to AT&T, cable to DirecTV, etc), and more.
It’s just a lot of change to take in all at once. But change is good. It’s very good.
I asked for it. I’ll keep asking for it, too.
