I’m looking to start a team this fall in my hometown of Columbia.
I have a few options available to me:
- Kickball
- Co-ed Softball
- Baseball
- Basketball
- Soccer
Right now, I’m leaning toward kickball or softball, but I’m undecided. I definitely want to play something though (along with my wife) as playing sports is a great way to burn calories without having to go to the gym. Don’t get me wrong, I love Hampton Hill, but it’s nice to burn some calories, get some fresh air, and make a few friends in the process.
Any pointers on starting a team? Anybody want to join one in Columbia? It looks like most leagues start up again in early August, so we’d have time to decide on a sport/name/colors etc.
I’m heading back to Charleston in a couple of weekends.
I was invited to participate by an ole’ buddy of mine in the 5k Donut Run being hosted by Sidewilk Charity and Krispy Kreme. It’s being held on April 24 at 9 AM and involves running, eating donuts, and more running.
It’s my kind of well-balanced activity.
The race is being sponsored by Eat, Drink, Anything. They’re paying my entry fee to the race and renting me a car for the trip (2+ hour drive). I’m really appreciative for being sponsored as that means I don’t have to go out of my own pocket to pay for the race and related travel expenses.
While I’m registered, I’m still looking for at least two more people to register and race alongside me. If you read the race description, the race involves eating a dozen donuts — the more team members you have, the less each person has to eat. If one team has one runner, that runner has to eat all twelve donuts — two runners eat six, and so on and so forth.
The larger the team the better, obviously.
Anybody want to run and eat a couple of donuts for charity?
Reason #1,452 to lose weight: swing.

My wife, mother, and sister all took the kids (Natalee and her cousin) to the park over the weekend. It was a long, sunny weekend with time being spent as a family celebrating Natalee’s first birthday — and swinging.
I also did something I hadn’t done in 15 years: play on a playground.
It was so fun. I crossed the monkey bars, slid down slides, ran across bridges, climbed up ladders, and swung on swings all the live long day — all things I couldn’t have done at 344 pounds. We must’ve stayed there for at least two hours without a care in the world playing in the sand with the kids.
It’s a shame that as we get older the phrase “go play outside” becomes reserved for kids. I don’t think my family is unique, but as I became older and became a teenager the more I stayed inside during family get-togethers and holidays while the younger kids were told to “go play outside.” Older family members would stay inside and talk, sip coffee, and watch television, while the young kids go outside and play catch or chase each other around.
That’s not for us. That won’t be for the Weeks family.
I’ll be turning 25 in July and I want to do nothing more than go play outside.
